Accommodation Welfare Benefits administered by the ‘CAF’

Accommodation Welfare Benefits are awarded by the public family allowance agency going by the name ‘CAF’ (Caisse d’allocations familiales) on the basis of social criteria (your resources, family situation, the nature of the accommodation, etc.)

You can carry out a simulation of these benefits here : simulation d’aides au logement

·        The ‘ALS’ benefit : allocation logement à caractère social

This is open to all students (of any age, family and professional situation) whether they be tenants, sub-tenants or joint tenants (locataires, sous-locataires ou colocataires).

Conditions for its award

  • The accommodation must not be less than 9 m² in size for one person or16 m² for a couple
  • The contract must be drawn up in the name of the occupier or occupiers.
  • For calculating the amount of benefit, the CAF takes into account the student’s personal resources and the rental amount.

The ALS awarded by the CAF is paid directly to the CROUS. The student only pays the remaining part of the rental.

·        The ‘APL’ benefit : aide personnalisée au logement

This is open to all students (of any age, family and professional situation). To benefit from the APL, you have to be the recognized tenant (locataire à titre principal) of an accommodation, old or new, for which the owner of the property has an authorized letting agreement (convention) with the State.

Conditions for its award
The amount of the APL is variable and is calculated depending on the resources, the size of the family, the place of residence, the amount of the rent and the type of tenancy

The APL awarded by the CAF is paid directly to the Crous. The student only pays the remaining part of the rental.

Please note: these benefits cannot be held concurrently with family allowances granted to parents of children less than 20 years old. The student who opts to take advantage of these accommodation benefits is therefore no long considered as dependent on his or her parents so far as family allowances are concerned.
